The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

As any significant awards ceremony approaches, one notices an outcry to include of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types actually cover many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games worldwide and have been for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
