The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
