A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its role in public projects. They were executed at an accelerated speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled persistent apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party urged an urgent suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
